Ah, the memories of bygone summers! The other children with their kites and me with a pair of scissors and my best running shoes on...
It’s been quite a while since I’ve posted a Weekly Photo Challenge and seeing as this week’s topic is “Sun” and the weather forecast calls for snow in the next 48 hours, I thought I’d try to cheer myself up by looking for some bright photos.

Nothing quite means "sunny summer day" like the sound of a squeaky clothesline. Photos are notoriously poor at reproducing sound so you'll just have to take my word for it that this clothesline is, indeed, squeaky.
I know that this week’s topic description alluded to full-blown sun, as opposed to shots of sunrise and sunset. But at what point is the sun not in the process of rising or setting? I believe that as long as a picture doesn’t include the sun touching the horizon, that picture is fair game for this week’s challenge so I’ve included a couple of near rises and sets.

The Sun on its way up over New York State as taken from Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario, Canada.
Here are a couple of sun shots I’ve previously posted… some of you older people might remember them.

Port Dalhousie Sunset
Don’t forget your sunblock!

Those are all beautiful. Breathtaking really.
April 22nd, 2012 at 18:14
Thanks so much! What I find really breathtaking about these photos is that I lug about 25 lbs. of camera stuff everywhere I go!
Glad you liked the photos!
April 22nd, 2012 at 18:45
That is a little strange… 😉
April 22nd, 2012 at 19:35
Hey, if by “that” you mean “you”, you wouldn’t be the first person to
accuse me of beingnotice I’m strange. What’s really strange is that Costco won’t let me in with my camera bag! I don’t want to have thousands of dollars of camera stuff melted in a hot car and I’ve never ever taken a shot in or around any Costco. If they’re worried about taking pictures inside, check everyone’s cellphones at the door. If it’s the bag, they are welcome to have me show them that I didn’t steal anything on my way out. Sheesh!
April 22nd, 2012 at 20:02
Lol, that is funny, but it makes sense that you wouldn’t want to leave it in the car too.

Great photos of the different sunsets. Good work.
April 22nd, 2012 at 19:30
Thanks very much! But getting great pictures of sunrises and sunsets are no-brainers… they’re almost always beautiful and if you miss one, another will be along in less than 12 hours!
April 22nd, 2012 at 19:30
Great photos! I love the lighthouse photo the most.
April 23rd, 2012 at 11:04
Thanks, but to tell the truth the lighthouse photo was “enhanced”… the bright sunlight washed out the lighthouse’s light’s reflection so I added the reflected light from a photo taken from the exact same spot (the camera was on a tripod) a few minutes earlier. Hope that secret didn’t spoil the photo for you!
April 23rd, 2012 at 18:38
Nope not at all, but thanks for the honesty. Ha!
April 30th, 2012 at 10:33
I don’t believe in “trade secrets”. I’ve been thinking of getting a little bit away from populated areas here to take some night sky photos. In preparation, I’ve been looking at techniques on-line and out of about ten, only one mentions “a secret” that seems to be the key to stunning skies. It’s so silly holding such things back because even armed with an identical technique, nobody would ever be able to reproduce a moment in time that passes just once.
April 30th, 2012 at 10:35
Very true! I’m glad that people are willing to share “secrets”. I’m still a beginner and I’m trying to soak up as much knowledge as possible.

Sunrise in Ontario – sunsets in Ontario! How exotic 🙂 Well, to me they are. Love the lighthouse too 🙂 Thank you for the pinback. If I could figure out how to do them…
April 23rd, 2012 at 11:13
Not half as exotic as your spooky Aussie trees! If you have some time on your hands, you might be interested in reading about this Canadian’s view of your fine land in my Australia Day post. (Apologies in advance for playing on a couple of stereotypes!)

Terrific selections! 🙂

Gorgeous pictures and I sympathize with the 25 lbs of camera gear. I don’t lug quite that much yet, but I’ve only been fooling around with cameras for a short while. Thanks also for the warning about avoiding Costco with my camera bag. There aren’t any Costcos here, but you never know, I could find myself near one some day!
April 23rd, 2012 at 11:47
I know I overdo my preparedness for a wide range of situations by carrying around lenses from a fish-eye to a 500mm mirror lens (plus a 2 x tele-extender and macro extension tubes) but every time I try to leave the house with a single lens an opportunity arises that makes me regret leaving something at home.
I don’t get Costco. I never brought the camera back to test them but I wrote them over a year ago and never got an answer to my question if forbidding the possession of a camera is a matter of policy (which is dumb because they don’t seem to mind cellphones with cameras) or if it was just an overzealous greeter on a power trip. Whatever the reason, they lost over $100 in sales that day.

Hey there little Raccoon! Thanks for the pingback!
April 23rd, 2012 at 11:58
You’re very welcome! I’m glad you’ve broken precedent by sending a thank-you note for a pingback… I’ve thought about doing it but never saw anyone else do it, so I never did it. Thanks, rebel! I’ll be doing it now, too!
April 23rd, 2012 at 12:55
Glad I could be able to break it 🙂
I think people should leave a short thanks for pingbacks.
April 23rd, 2012 at 13:08
I agree! I’ll be making a habit of it from now on.
April 23rd, 2012 at 06:08
All the images captured a magical moment. From the playful, exiting colorful kite on a clear blue sky to the romantic skyline and calm waters around the lighthouse. Beautiful…Thanks for today’s wonderful sunshine.
April 23rd, 2012 at 12:14
It’s been a while since I’ve posted a Photo Challenge but I like trying to explore various aspects of the topic. This time I was more literal, but this time I tried to show various moods. Thanks for catching that!
April 23rd, 2012 at 08:06
wow, there’s something about the squeaky clothesline image that is quite insanely good. very nice.
April 23rd, 2012 at 12:17
Strange, eh? I was looking through some of my relatively old ones and came across that one and it said the same thing to me looking at the file that it said to me when I snapped the picture. I wish I knew how to get everything right every time, but then that might spoil the fun of hitting on the occasional one that works.
April 23rd, 2012 at 08:09
Nice sunset shots! I loved them! Great compositions too! 🙂
April 23rd, 2012 at 12:26
Magandang gapi! I’m glad you like them. I really struggle with getting composition… I always feel a bit ashamed if I don’t get it right in-camera and have to crop to make it better.
April 24th, 2012 at 05:19
Cropping is okay. All I know is keep shooting to keep learning! Have a nice shooting day! 🙂
April 30th, 2012 at 11:15
Thanks! You too!
April 23rd, 2012 at 13:16
Spectacular photos, you have an artistic eye for compsoition and have captured the sun in all its glory..
April 30th, 2012 at 09:03
I thank you kindly but, truth be told, I struggle in the composition department and to make matters worse, I’m a cropophobic (who is trying to mend his ways).

Awesome pics! I grew up in Port Dalhousie & NOTL, thanks for the great memories.
April 30th, 2012 at 11:20
I moved here only about ten years ago (thanks in part to Greaves jam store in NOTL and the pier in Port Dalhousie). Did you hear that a developer bought up most of the “party block” in Port Dalhousie? They’ll be tearing down many of the bars and will put up condos. What a loss!
April 30th, 2012 at 11:53
Ciao! Yes, friends of mine actually own the company that bought the party block in Port. I think it’s a good thing for Port Dalhousie, all those bars are not necessary.
April 30th, 2012 at 13:27
I’m middle aged so the Port was never my scene but the bar area kind of reminds me of Place Jacques Cartier in Montreal were I spent many enjoyable evenings. It wasn’t as residential as Port Dalhousie and I can certainly understand the residents’ welcoming a little peace and quiet on summer weekends. I guess it’s just a case of misplaced nostalgia!
April 24th, 2012 at 21:37
Beautiful shots, every single one of them 🙂
April 30th, 2012 at 11:22
I’m glad you liked them!
April 26th, 2012 at 13:18
All the images are simply superb…I loved the caption for the clothesline and also the sunset at port dalhousie…thanks for the pingback!!
April 30th, 2012 at 11:30
I like to add a little humour to what I feel is the truth and try to record a little bit of the worlds infinite beauty. By the way, the Port Dalhousie sunset wasn’t quite that vibrant in real life… that’s just how it impressed me so I made the image that way.
April 26th, 2012 at 20:37
I like second and forth. It’s depth field of effect is awesome and the forth one is a great take on the theme. Nice job, indeed.
April 30th, 2012 at 11:39
Thanks so much! We have long winters here and I’ve always associated clotheslines with sun and summer. I moved here from a different province a decade ago and there are birds here (blue jays) that sometimes make noises like clotheslines. At first I thought that everyone in the neighbourhood was drying their clothes every morning!
